YAB Review: 'New Moon' @ Midnight
Today’s Youth Advisory Board post is from Chelsea Swiggett, one of our newest members (look for the official announcement on Ypulse next week!) and a Twilight fan who was among the masses that took over theaters at midnight last night.

YAB Review: ‘New Moon’ @ Midnight
What was the biggest draw for you to see this movie?
The stars definitely didn’t hurt. It’s no secret that most girls find Edward and/or Jacob irresistible. Just going to the midnight release proved that. The first time Edward came on-screen, the entire theater erupted in high-pitched yelps. And the decibel one girl reached when Jacob whipped off his shirt would have made an opera singer cover her ears. And it’s not just the boys that made an impact. I was excited to see Dakota Fanning as Jane, a sadistic vampire belonging to the Volturi. She played her part phenomenally, and I’m hoping to see more of her in later films. I always think the stars play a huge role in the draw towards a movie or tv show.
What did you expect going in?
The trailers and clips for New Moon were horribly taunting, and every time I saw one I got a sudden squee-fest in my gut. They amped up the wait and made it almost excruciating, but it made the big midnight release even more exciting.
Describe your moviegoing experience
We bought our tickets online, and I’m definitely glad we did. When we went up the escalator, there was a line forming 50-people thick, and that was an hour and a half early. We were seated pretty quickly, and almost every seat was taken. That hour-long wait before the movie started was particularly hilarious. I heard Twilight Moms in the background talking about merchandise and teenagers arguing over who was hunkier. You could definitely feel the energy, and almost everyone was sporting Twilight or New Moon apparel.
Sum It Up. Did you spot any brands?
Anyone who liked Twilight won’t be disappointed. If you watched the commercials, you already know Edward leaves Forks. Jacob has a bigger spot in “New Moon” (as well as bigger muscles), and he tries to be both a friend to Bella (and maybe something a little more), as well as a member of his “pack.” I’d already read the books way before Twilight even came out in theaters, and they’ve been a guilty pleasure since page/minute one. But “New Moon” paired romance with some horror – the werewolves were pretty vicious, and the Volturi definitely had a creep factor – and a good dose of action, which made it seem less like a guilty pleasure and more of a cult classic feel. I think “New Moon” took everything a step further, not just with the special effects and plot, but with the acting and artistry, too.
I didn’t spot any brands in the movie itself (I might just have been too distracted with Jacob’s abs), but I myself was wearing a New Moon zip-up from Nordstrom. I wasn’t the only one wearing part of the New Moon line, either.
What did you walk out of the theater thinking?
My very first thought was anger, as was the rest of the theaters’. You could hear loud grumbles from practically everyone. “New Moon” definitely left you with a cliffhanger, and it was both appreciated and hated. The entire movie was enthralling, and despite it lasting until around 2:30 a.m., it kept me awake the whole time. I definitely think it one-upped Twilight, and I’m expecting only better to come.
